Gear

What I'm shooting with right now:
  • Nikon d7000
  • Nikon F2 Photomic
  • NIkkor 20mm f/3.5 UD non-AI
  • Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 non-AI
  • Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 AI-S
  • Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 AI-S
  • Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AF-D
  • Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 AI-S Micro
  • Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 AF-S
  • Nikkor 85mm f/1.8K AI'd
  • Nikkor 400mm f/5.6 AI
I carry the 24 AI-S, 55, 85, and 70-300 in my bag.  I almost never shoot AF lenses, although the 70-300 got quite a bit of play while I was in Iceland (I didn't have the 24 then, otherwise I would have taken that instead of the 28).  The 400mm lens isn't too heavy, but it is a bit large and doesn't fit in my bag.  The 28mm focal length isn't my favorite—I prefer the wider field of view from the 24.  The non-AI is better than the AI-S version, which is designed as a photojournalism lens with a short focus throw. But it's acceptable when I go that wide.  Someday I'll get the non-AI lens converted and sell the AI-S, which is in great shape.  I picked up several of the lenses in a large batch mainly to grab the 400mm—a beater, but the glass is good quality.

The keepers of the bunch are the 24 NAI, 55 Micro, and the 400.  Nothing against the others, but they don't see a lot of use or else comprise focal lengths I'm not interested in.  I might replace the 85 with it's sharper and smaller f/2 cousin.  Most often the 55 is attached.

In general, I hold with the adage that people take pictures, not cameras, and I do my best not to over-complicate my equipment.
